DCM worked alongside Jacobs, Calibre and Mike Moore Landscape Architects on improvements to the central area of the University of Otago campus in Dunedin. The project sits within and alongside some of New Zealand’s most iconic university buildings and public spaces, making the relationship between the new landscape works and the established campus character an important part of the design.
DCM was involved from the early concept stage through to detailed design and construction oversight. Landscape concept plans and illustrations were prepared in close collaboration with University staff to communicate the proposed approach and support approval by the University Council before detailed design began. The wider works included extensive new paving, improved accessibility through the campus, integrated artwork, and the planting of more than 5,000 native and exotic plants across rain gardens and planted areas.
Completed in early 2017, the project helped create a more accessible, cohesive and welcoming central campus environment. The combination of upgraded public spaces, planting and artwork strengthens the landscape character of the University while improving how people move through and experience the heart of the campus.
