24 Mansfield Avenue, know as The Mansfield, is a residential apartment development in Merivale, Christchurch, made up of two apartment blocks arranged around a shared internal accessway. DCM has been involved through the resource consent process, preparing the Urban Design Assessment, subsequent urban design reviews and the landscape design for the development.
The design breaks the development into two separate buildings to reduce the overall scale and bulk, with landscaping, building setbacks and variation in materials helping soften the development from Mansfield Avenue. DCM’s landscape design includes tree and garden planting throughout the site, with native planting around St Albans Creek and a mix of native and exotic species used elsewhere.
The wider design also considers privacy, sunlight, pedestrian movement and safety, with parking largely contained within the buildings and the shared accessway designed as a slower-speed environment for both vehicles and pedestrians. Landscaping around St Albans Creek remains an important part of the site, providing amenity within the development while contributing to the ecological value of the waterway.
