Riverside Market and Guthrey Lane is a central Christchurch development comprising four commercial buildings connected by a network of pedestrian laneways. The lanes provide links through to Ballantynes, the Lichfield Street car park and the Avon river, helping integrate the development with the surrounding central city network. Riverside itsself is a popular attraction for both Christchruch resisdence and wider New Zealand and intonational travellers as it holds some of the best shops and eateries in town.
DCM provided urban design certification and landscape design services for the project, developing both landscape concepts and detailed design drawings for the laneways. The design included paving, planting, street furniture and integrated artwork, with a focus on creating a cohesive and engaging public realm between the buildings.
An artwork competition was also held to develop three interactive street art pieces within the laneways. The winning designs by Jake Clark featured a pūkeko, kererū and waka, each painted on a different wall within the network and adding a distinctive layer of identity to the spaces.
